Breezy, Beachy, Classic Interior Design

March 9, 2017

One of our favorite styles takes its inspiration from the West Indies. Breezy and laid back with classic furniture pieces, this look can take more formal pieces and make them perfect for everyday life.  Fabrics are neutral and linen and woods are rich. The history of this style came about with various European countries settling in the Caribbean islands. As a result, there are interesting variations amongst each island from French, British, and Dutch influence to African and native Caribe influence. This blend of different cultures creates a rich, yet relaxed look that is entirely its own. The best thing about this look is that you will feel like you’re on a tropical vacation in your own home. You don’t have to live in the Caribbean to have a fabulous West Indies inspired space. Get started by taking the fun and easy Vavaroom Style Quiz and the online interior design... Read More

Why Gray Isn’t Going Anywhere In Interior Design

September 26, 2016

It seems that you can’t get away from it. It’s everywhere in interior design. Gray. Love it or hate it, it has staying power. It is the perfect neutral. You can pair it with warm colors or cool, it can go modern or traditional, cozy or airy. It evokes so many feelings: serenity, calm, sophistication, and comfort. It works great in any room, be it a living room, dining room, bedroom, or kitchen. Going gray on larger pieces like sofas, chairs, draperies, and bedding can leave the door open to adding color in places where it's easier to change it out such as on pillows, artwork, and accessories. You can also keep everything gray and neutral to keep a room calm and uncomplicated. With such versatility it’s no wonder this neutral du jour is lasting longer than, well, a jour. So is gray your perfect color? Sign up at www.vavaroom.com to... Read More

Will Beni Ourain Rugs Work With My Design Style?

September 20, 2016

So you know those rugs that you’ve been seeing everywhere over the last couple of years? The white, shaggy rugs with the uncomplicated, primitive geometric patterns. Yeah, those. Ever wonder what the story is there? Me too. I feel that these rugs have become so widely distributed and copied that it is important to know and appreciate their history and artistry. These rugs are woven by women of the Beni Ourain tribes of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The tribal people of this region have been weaving rugs for literally thousands of years and patterns and symbols in the weaves are passed down from one generation to the next.  It’s remarkable to know that such a culture still exists in our ever modernizing world.  I mean, can you actually believe that there are still people out there that aren’t attached to phones? I know. Craziness. Morocco, a land of desert,... Read More

Why So Much Aqua?

August 11, 2016

A somewhat frequent topic of conversation between one of my best friends (also a designer) and me is what we get the most requests for. The color that pops up again and again for us both is aqua. Why is it that this color is asked for on the regular? Obviously one factor for us is that we live along the coast of southeastern North Carolina, but there has to be more to it than geography. To many it is a very calming and soothing color that creates a restful retreat as it can be unobtrusive and quite demure and to others it is bright and joyful and reminds them of a day at the beach. There are countless variations on the color itself. Some tints are more silvery and quiet, while others are bold, spunky shades that border on turquoise. I’ve found that aqua can really work as a... Coastal Design For Every Location

July 18, 2016

I am fortunate. I get to live in a town where others vacation. Living near the beautiful waters of the southeastern coast is a dream come true. Due to my locale, I absolutely love coastal style. There is something so breezy and effortless about it while remaining inherently chic. Coastal design can mean different things to different people depending on where “your coast” is. With many different coastal styles, some things remain constant. Furniture in a coastal interior should always be low maintenance and cleanable. Living rooms should be laid back areas meant for friendly gatherings. Bedrooms should put the rest of the world far away to create a completely stress free retreat. The focal point of any room with a coastal feel should be nature. Working in natural elements and colors creates a design that is in harmony with it's surroundings. From the traditional, soft low country interiors of... Read More
