Coastal Design For Every Location

July 18, 2016

I am fortunate. I get to live in a town where others vacation. Living near the beautiful waters of the southeastern coast is a dream come true. Due to my locale, I absolutely love coastal style. There is something so breezy and effortless about it while remaining inherently chic. Coastal design can mean different things to different people depending on where “your coast” is. With many different coastal styles, some things remain constant. Furniture in a coastal interior should always be low maintenance and cleanable. Living rooms should be laid back areas meant for friendly gatherings. Bedrooms should put the rest of the world far away to create a completely stress free retreat. The focal point of any room with a coastal feel should be nature. Working in natural elements and colors creates a design that is in harmony with it's surroundings. From the traditional, soft low country interiors of... Read More

June 14, 2016

Subway tile is everywhere. Even when another new trend for kitchen and bath comes around, subway tile still sticks around in some way, shape, or form. But, why? I mean, it’s just white rectangular tile. What’s so great about it? Yes, it can be very expected and boring… but what keeps subway tile around is its versatility. There are so many creative ways to use it so that it is unique and interesting. Here are some fab examples of how you can use it in your perfect room. [caption id="attachment_844" align="alignnone" width="640"] No way is this boring! What To Do With All Those Books!

May 18, 2016

For people who have more books than clothes, there comes the dilemma of how to organize them and how to make all those bookshelves look pretty.  If you're not one for adding other objects in with your books (shame on you!), there are other options for making it look good.  Here are some ideas for how to arrange books in ways that make sense for you.   Mix in objects you love with your books. What’s Old Is New

May 10, 2016

Ever heard, “What is old is new again”? Yeah, there is so much truth to that. I feel like every year I am seeing something from the past revived in a slightly new way. Being very introspective, I have thought to myself that we are very alike to the Victorians. How? They did the exact same thing. After the new ideas of the Neoclassical and Empire styles, it was like they ran out of original ideas. They went on to embrace the old, but interpreted in a new way. There was revival after revival of past styles. Gothic revival, Neoclassical revival, Renaissance revival… the list was endless. And then of course there were later revivals of the revivals. Goodness! We have been doing the exact same thing for the last thirty years or so. While we can look at an older interior and say, “that looks very 80s,” there is... Read More

What’s With All The White Walls Y’all?

May 3, 2016

My mother and I have always poked fun at my grandmother for her house that has nothing but white walls. We poked fun enough to where she eventually listened to us and painted a few rooms in soft blues. But looking back, maybe she had the right idea. Recently my grandmother, being the sharp, witty woman that she is, said to me with a smirk, “I noticed in all the design magazines everyone has white walls.” Just a couple years ago I, like the rest of the world at the time, could not accept a room as finished if it didn’t have some sort of hue on the walls. White walls were almost sinful! A missed opportunity. So what happened? Why all of a sudden did the entire world grasp a hold of taking white-out to a space? My theory is that after years of having no white in our... Read More
