Ahoy Matey – Shiplap In Interior Design

September 28, 2016

We’ve all seen them: Horizontal planks, one on top of the next, running the length of the walls and usually whitewashed. Shiplap is everywhere in the interior design world. There’s no denying the depth and architectural interest that it lends a house. It gives any room character and can work with various styles. It can read as coastal, cottagey, or even modern if you play it right. Though it is being seen more and more in newly built custom homes, you can find original shiplap (if you’re lucky) in homes built in the early 1900s or earlier. It is usually found in more modest homes from the time as plaster was more expensive and time consuming. Once upon a time in the not so distant past, people renovating old homes would cover shiplap up with dry wall or worse yet, take it down and add dry wall. Thank goodness an appreciation for character and... Perfect Plants For Your Perfect Room

August 1, 2016

Fiddle leaf figs are everywhere and I’m sure you’ve seen them a million places by now. It is the coveted, of-the-moment (A very long moment, I grant you) tree that interior designers are putting in all types of splendid spaces. I, myself was lured by their ginormous glossy leaves and fun shape and purchased one last year and I love him. Yes, him. I named him Cam. I feel like I try much harder to keep my plants alive when I humanize them. He looks perfect in my living room in a blue and white Chinoiserie pot. Cam is definitely a lot more high maintenance than I thought he was going to be. He sits in a corner between two windows that face north. It is recommended that fiddle leaf figs receive bright, indirect light. A perfect spot! He did great for the first 9 months or so. I watered... Read More

Porches ~ The Best Room In The House

June 23, 2016

We here in the South have a special love affair with our front porches. We sip on our drinks while rocking the hours away and invite our neighbors and friends up to socialize. It is the place where you greet visitors and retire after supper to converse and unwind. A porch is much more than just a porch. It is a first impression and extension of your home. So why should it be treated any differently than any other room inside your home? Create an outdoor room and let it flow with what you have inside your home. You will be using that porch every chance you get, especially with the beautiful autumn weather that is happening. Bringing furniture onto a porch can completely transform it into a fully functioning room. Adding pieces like upholstered outdoor sofas and chairs along with case pieces like coffee tables and bar carts creates... Read More

What’s Old Is New

May 10, 2016

Ever heard, “What is old is new again”? Yeah, there is so much truth to that. I feel like every year I am seeing something from the past revived in a slightly new way. Being very introspective, I have thought to myself that we are very alike to the Victorians. How? They did the exact same thing. After the new ideas of the Neoclassical and Empire styles, it was like they ran out of original ideas. They went on to embrace the old, but interpreted in a new way. There was revival after revival of past styles. Gothic revival, Neoclassical revival, Renaissance revival… the list was endless. And then of course there were later revivals of the revivals. Goodness! We have been doing the exact same thing for the last thirty years or so. While we can look at an older interior and say, “that looks very 80s,” there is... Read More

Father’s Day kisses

June 15, 2015

Father’s Day deserves some creativity. Father’s seem to be so content with very little. Finding a gift that is perfect can be elusive, but could also be right under your nose. Is he a biker, a fix-it guy, a sharp-shooter? Remnants of these hobbies can make the most thoughtful of gifts and can warm your home with touches of “kisses”. Every home deserves some kisses here and there. (more…) Read More
