Why Gray Isn’t Going Anywhere In Interior Design

September 26, 2016

It seems that you can’t get away from it. It’s everywhere in interior design. Gray. Love it or hate it, it has staying power. It is the perfect neutral. You can pair it with warm colors or cool, it can go modern or traditional, cozy or airy. It evokes so many feelings: serenity, calm, sophistication, and comfort. It works great in any room, be it a living room, dining room, bedroom, or kitchen. Going gray on larger pieces like sofas, chairs, draperies, and bedding can leave the door open to adding color in places where it's easier to change it out such as on pillows, artwork, and accessories. You can also keep everything gray and neutral to keep a room calm and uncomplicated. With such versatility it’s no wonder this neutral du jour is lasting longer than, well, a jour. So is gray your perfect color? Sign up at www.vavaroom.com to... Read More

Perfect Plants For Your Perfect Room

August 1, 2016

Fiddle leaf figs are everywhere and I’m sure you’ve seen them a million places by now. It is the coveted, of-the-moment (A very long moment, I grant you) tree that interior designers are putting in all types of splendid spaces. I, myself was lured by their ginormous glossy leaves and fun shape and purchased one last year and I love him. Yes, him. I named him Cam. I feel like I try much harder to keep my plants alive when I humanize them. He looks perfect in my living room in a blue and white Chinoiserie pot. Cam is definitely a lot more high maintenance than I thought he was going to be. He sits in a corner between two windows that face north. It is recommended that fiddle leaf figs receive bright, indirect light. A perfect spot! He did great for the first 9 months or so. I watered... Read More

Modern Minimalism – Clean and Simple Design

July 7, 2016

Sometimes you just want to clear your mind… to take away the clutter of life and just relax. Minimalism is the interior design equivalent to this concept. We humans love our “stuff”, so naturally our homes tend to collect said “stuff”. A minimalist space keeps clutter at bay and simplifies everything. Clean lines, few (if any) accessories, and no busy patterns or excessive color. Furniture and architectural elements are pared down and spare. It is design stripped down to only its most essential elements. Modern materials such as concrete and metal feel at home in the stark beauty of a minimalist interior. From living rooms and bedrooms to kitchens and baths the style translates to every room in the house. Minimalist interiors are avant-garde and feel supremely sophisticated.  While this style does fit seamlessly in a metropolitan setting, it can also work perfectly in other locations. With its stark lines... Read More

Subway tile is everywhere. Even when another new trend for kitchen and bath comes around, subway tile still sticks around in some way, shape, or form. But, why? I mean, it’s just white rectangular tile. What’s so great about it? Yes, it can be very expected and boring… but what keeps subway tile around is its versatility. There are so many creative ways to use it so that it is unique and interesting. Here are some fab examples of how you can use it in your perfect room. [caption id="attachment_844" align="alignnone" width="640"] No way is this boring! This is a very cool and modern look.[/caption]   (more…) Read More

What To Do With All Those Books!

May 18, 2016

Nicely framed family photos, art pieces, and small low maintenance plants (hello succulents!) are a great way to give your shelves a collected look. Vary the arrangement of the books to add more interest and balance. Have some books standing and others stacked. (more…) Read More

What’s With All The White Walls Y’all?

May 3, 2016

My mother and I have always poked fun at my grandmother for her house that has nothing but white walls. We poked fun enough to where she eventually listened to us and painted a few rooms in soft blues. But looking back, maybe she had the right idea. Recently my grandmother, being the sharp, witty woman that she is, said to me with a smirk, “I noticed in all the design magazines everyone has white walls.” Just a couple years ago I, like the rest of the world at the time, could not accept a room as finished if it didn’t have some sort of hue on the walls. White walls were almost sinful! A missed opportunity. So what happened? Why all of a sudden did the entire world grasp a hold of taking white-out to a space? My theory is that after years of having no white in our... Read More

Father’s Day kisses

June 15, 2015

Father’s Day deserves some creativity. Father’s seem to be so content with very little. Finding a gift that is perfect can be elusive, but could also be right under your nose. Is he a biker, a fix-it guy, a sharp-shooter? Remnants of these hobbies can make the most thoughtful of gifts and can warm your home with touches of “kisses”. Every home deserves some kisses here and there. (more…) Read More
