Wallpaper? Really?

August 19, 2016

The reaction that designers get when we propose wallpaper is usually, “Ick”. The term wallpaper conjures up images of bad mid to late 20th century design or your grandmother’s house. But the wallpaper being produced nowadays is so different from what was once so prevalent. From classic grass cloth to bold and modern patterns, the wall coverings of today are amazing and so versatile. Wallpaper can add so much interest to a bathroom, elegance to a dining room, texture to a bedroom, or some fun to a living room. Adding pattern or texture to your walls can make furniture that is on the simple side really stand out. So, here’s our attempt to change your mind about wallpaper.   [caption id="attachment_1466" align="alignnone" width="520"] This fun pattern is so modern and cool![/caption]   [caption id="attachment_1467" align="alignnone" width="520"] Elephant Ears Design - In a tone on tone bathroom, the subtle, winding pattern... Coastal Design For Every Location

July 18, 2016

I am fortunate. I get to live in a town where others vacation. Living near the beautiful waters of the southeastern coast is a dream come true. Due to my locale, I absolutely love coastal style. There is something so breezy and effortless about it while remaining inherently chic. Coastal design can mean different things to different people depending on where “your coast” is. With many different coastal styles, some things remain constant. Furniture in a coastal interior should always be low maintenance and cleanable. Living rooms should be laid back areas meant for friendly gatherings. Bedrooms should put the rest of the world far away to create a completely stress free retreat. The focal point of any room with a coastal feel should be nature. Working in natural elements and colors creates a design that is in harmony with it's surroundings. From the traditional, soft low country interiors of... Read More

My Love Affair With Blue & White

June 29, 2016

My love of blue and white began at a young age. For as long as I can remember I have admired the blue and white dishes that my mother always had on display in the glass cabinets in the kitchen. Though it wasn’t her fine china and didn’t get to reside in the china cabinet in the formal dining room, it still held a place of honor. It comes as no surprise that as an adult (Hey, when did that happen??), I have decked my house out in blue and white. From my own wedding china to antique blue and white ginger jars and vases that I’ve found out and about, it goes throughout the main living areas of our home and even made its way to the décor of our wedding. Blue and white is my go-to for reasons beyond my own nostalgia. It is the perfect color palette.... Read More

What’s Old Is New

May 10, 2016

Ever heard, “What is old is new again”? Yeah, there is so much truth to that. I feel like every year I am seeing something from the past revived in a slightly new way. Being very introspective, I have thought to myself that we are very alike to the Victorians. How? They did the exact same thing. After the new ideas of the Neoclassical and Empire styles, it was like they ran out of original ideas. They went on to embrace the old, but interpreted in a new way. There was revival after revival of past styles. Gothic revival, Neoclassical revival, Renaissance revival… the list was endless. And then of course there were later revivals of the revivals. Goodness! We have been doing the exact same thing for the last thirty years or so. While we can look at an older interior and say, “that looks very 80s,” there is... Read More

Do you wear your walls well?

April 12, 2016

Before I start a project with a client, I notice their eye color, their skin tones and try to determine what colors make them feel good. Can you wear a dress or a tie that is the same color as your wall? If not, it may be time for a shopping trip to the paint store. Let Vavaroom find your true inner wall. (more…) Read More
